The West Springfield Fire Department was founded in 1883 and currently has 11 appliances that serve a fire station. There is a public radio station, the WSPU - FM (Radio City Music Station), founded in 1953 with a circulation of about 5,500. WestSpringfield has one of the largest fire departments in Massachusetts and the second largest in Massachusetts.

The song "Hair so big," accompanied by a slapstick-inspired video of an action film by Phil Steiger, was inspired by reading a newspaper article about the West Springfield Fire Department and its history. It peaks at # 36 and can be heard on WSPU-FM when the West Springfield Police Department is featured on the station's website.

The settlers fled to higher ground on the east side of the river and founded Springfield after a major hurricane in 1635. The area known as West Springfield was populated by settlers who fled the Great Hurricane of 1634 to the East River plateau and made the area known as "West Springfield" in 1735, according to a newspaper article on the history of the fire department. Although it has no right or legal claim to Interstate 91, Massachusetts highway officials yielded to Springfield's strong pressure when confronted with a technicality: The existing section of Interstate 93, built in 1952-53, did not meet state design standards. The argument at the time was that Springfield, being a more populous city than WestSpringfield, should have a major highway running through it.

There is no airport in West Springfield, but Amtrak service is still available in Springfield and there is a central train station. The nearest airport for commercial passenger flights is Beaumont Airport in Boston, although there are no direct flights to or from Springfield or any other city in the state.

For those who prefer air-conditioned comfort, the Majestic Theater on Elm Street in West Springfield, MA is more than just a place to relax. The balloons represent some of the best Western fair has to offer, but my favorite is definitely the 75 foot cat in the balloon hat.

West Springfield borders to the west on the linear cliffs and volcanic traps known as East Mountain. In the east, hawks rise above the vast forests that stretch through western Massachusetts, while in the north lie the mountains of New Hampshire, Maine, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

West Springfield, bordered to the east by the Connecticut River, was settled in the early 19th century and has a long and colourful history. The city is known as the "West Side" because it is located on the west side of the Hartford River in Springfield, a fact that played a major role in the early history of this city, but there are many other names for the city, such as "East Side," "South Side" and "North Side." In 1847, the Western Railroad opened, connecting it with Worcester and the state of New York via the New Hampshire and New Jersey lines.
